The One-Week Challenge: Swim Like You Mean It

You've been reading my theory. This week, try one of five simple changes that add up to a smarter way to swim. No new program, no big commitment, just small wins you get to keep.

Maybe you've been reading along for a while now, nodding at all this talk about structure and consistency and cutting the junk, quietly agreeing with me, and then going to the pool and swimming exactly the way you always have.

No shame in it. Reading about training and actually changing what you do at the wall are two very different things, and the gap between them is where most good intentions go to die.

So let's close that gap this week. Not with a whole new program, not with some big commitment. Just one week of swimming like you actually mean it, and seeing what happens.

Here's how it works. Take your normal week in the pool, whatever you were going to do anyway, and run it through the list below. You don't have to do all of them. Do the ones you can. Every single one is a small win, and a week full of small wins is how this whole thing starts.

Swim your easy stuff actually easy. Most people turn their recovery swimming into a medium grind without noticing. This week, when the set says easy, make it embarrassingly easy. Slower than feels natural. The win is that you'll finally have something left in the tank for the parts that matter.

Do your drills first, and do them fresh. Not buried in the middle of a hard set when you're already gassed. Pick one or two drills, do them at the very start of your session while your body is fresh enough to actually control the movement. The win is drills that improve your stroke instead of grooving your bad habits deeper.

Leave on a real send-off, just once. Pick one set and give it an actual departure time off the clock, leave every 1:45, say, instead of the usual “20 seconds rest” after each effort. The win is that for the first time, you'll know exactly how fast you're going, which is the single most useful thing a swimmer can know.

Kill one junk swim entirely. You know the one. The session where you just get in and swim around for an hour to hit some number in your head. This week, either cut it completely and spend the time with friends or family, or replace it with a shorter swim that actually has a point. The win is a fresher body and the discovery that the junk swimming was never doing anything for you anyway.

Watch the clock on every hard rep. Not to stress you out. Just to see the truth. When you swim something fast, look at what it says. The win is honest information, and honest information is what every good decision from here on gets built on.

That's it. Do what you can this week, break the rules when you have to, but give it an honest try. Nobody's grading you.

And here's what you'll notice by the end of it. You'll have swum less, or at least no more, and you'll feel better in the water than you have in months. The easy swim you finally swam easy, the drill you did fresh, the send-off you held, those don't disappear on Sunday night. They’re now in your bank. You just upgraded the way you swim, and now you have a platform to build on.
